How to choose a tiara

There are some simple steps to take when selecting your tiara.

1. Match a detail of the tiara to your gown.

If your gown has a detail, pattern or embroidery design it is possible to incorporate this into the wirework of a tiara. Similarly, beads on your gown can often be closely matched and used in your tiara.

2. Hairstyle and face-shape

Firstly, how are you going to have your hair?
If you are going to wear your hair up, the tiara can be a lot taller to frame the hairstyle behind it. Hair worn up in a bun-style can be decorated with a circlet-style tiara that encircles the hair, or perhaps a series of pins with bead clusters can be used
amongst the hair to highlight curls.
If you are going to wear your hair down, a very flattering tiara is one that gently tapers down at the sides, thereby creating a small amount of height at the centre. The amount of height in this case is determined by how straight the hair is, as a small tiara would get lost in a sea of curls and a larger tiara would sit precariously on straight hair. An asymmetrical design works well with long hair worn down and also with straight hair.
Your face- shape probably determines how you are going to wear your hair but generally a tall tiara will tend to lengthen the longer face and a wide tiara with no height at the centre will exaggerate a wider face.

3. Will you wear a veil?

If you have decided to have a veil, there are no fixed rules about where the tiara sits. Some people will have a gap between veil and tiara and others will wear the tiara close to a veil. Generally though, the tiara tends to look best when positioned forwards on the head. If you do not want a gap between tiara and veil a wide comb-based tiara can be pushed into the hair much further back and closer to a veil.

4. Choose your tiara colours to complement your gown and colouring.

The paler, silvery tiaras will look best with whiter gowns. Those gowns with a hint of ivory and gold can look better with gold tones or cream colours in the tiara. Do you wear gold or silver? Most people know either way and can choose a tiara wire-colour to suit their skin tones. If in doubt, it is often possible to have a mix of gold and silver wirework to soften the gold colour. What colour flowers are you having? Maybe a few beads of the same colour as the flowers would bring together the whole look.
